Intro to the Jr Deputy Youth Program
The Junior Deputy Program was established in 2020. This program is a reboot of the Jr. Deputy Sheriff mentoring program that was implemented by Sheriff Tom Gulley in 1947 but was discontinued in the 1990s. This updated program reaches both boys and girls to help them grow into mature productive law-abiding citizens.

Jr Deputy Youth Initiatives
We believe that it is critical to have a comprehensive and effective youth mentoring program to prevent and reduce the number of youth who enter the criminal justice system. To accomplish this we provide support for these programs;
- B.U.I.L.D. program (Boys United in Leadership Development), a mentoring program for elementary boys.
- Young Ladies of the Future – mentoring program for high school girls.
- The OK (Our Kids) program -a mentoring program for African American male students.
- A three-day summer camp.
- The six-week summer program.
All five of these programs offer caring mentors to inspire and educate school aged students on important life skills. These include critical thinking, decision making, anger management interacting with police and early career training. These programs are offered weekly in elementary, middle and high schools in addition to summer programs.
